With reference to first in-service applications in the mid eighty’s, we are now approaching two hundred millions flight hours accumulated by commercial airplanes incorporating primary composite structures. Even if the achievement of very high safety standards must be recognised from this experience, Industry and Certifying Agencies are now facing major evolutions or steps forward:
- An increasing usage of composite materials, now reaching more than 50% of the airframe empty weight in the most recent projects of commercial airplanes - the A350 XWB and the B787. Such an evolution leads to larger and more complex structural elements, some of them being submitted to quite a different environment.
- An ‘extended enterprise’ context, where the principal aircraft manufacturers are willing to put increasing responsibilities for the design and manufacturing into the hands of their Risk Sharing Partners or subcontractors.
- A new and strong willing to introduce composites in engine critical parts.
In a more constrained environment with increasing pressure on time frames, this context creates new challenges for aircraft certification.
